What Does Athlete's Foot Look Like?

Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection. There are three types of foot fungal infection and the symptoms depend on the type of foot fungal infection. The types are briefly explained below.

Inter-digital (between the outer toes) type infection: It is the most common type and usually occurs between the fourth and the fifth toes. The symptoms are formation of scales on the skin. Sometimes blisters, cuts and cracked skin may also occur between the toes or on the soles of the feet, resulting in pain, swelling and inflammation. If the infection is left untreated, secondary bacterial infection can accompany the fungal infection.

Moccasin-type infection: The symptoms include fine scaly eruption on the soles of the feet with some soreness. If left untreated, it may spread to the side of the heel and at the front of the foot. Skin dryness on the sides or the soles of the feet is also a visible symptom. In worst cases, the toenails get infected causing thick, discolored, or separated toenails.

Vesicular infection: The symptoms are appearance of small blisters on the instep of the foot. It may also develop between the toes, on the heel, on the sole or on the top of the foot.

However, all instances of rashes and eruptions on the foot might not be due to manifestation of athlete's foot. If the foot is red, swollen, sore, blistered, and oozing, it might be due to a severe form of dermatitis.

Whether it is athlete's foot or dermatitis, it is in your best interests to visit a dermatologist who will be able to diagnose and prescribe the right treatment for your skin problem.
