When Does Tonsillitis Require a Tonsillectomy?

Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils. It causes throat and ear pain, fever and chills, as well as a general feeling of malaise. Most cases of bacterial antibiotics can be easily treated with antibiotics. However, viral tonsillitis cannot be cured with a prescription and will usually go away within three to four days.

Many times, if you suffer from repeated about of tonsillitis, your doctor may suggest a tonsillectomy. There are some home remedies for tonsillitis. A tonsillectomy is an invasive surgery and will require significant down time from work or school. Here are some home remedies that might help to relieve some of the symptoms of tonsillitis.

A mixture of boiled milk, turmeric, and powdered pepper can help east the burning pain of tonsillitis. Other treatments include gargling with a mixture of lime juice, salt, and boiled water. Cool drinks will also help to relieve some of the pain.

Tonsillitis should not be confused with tonsil stones. Tonsil stones are the white bumps that can often be seen on the tonsils. They can cause bad breath and irritation, but are not a significant medical condition. You can dislodge these bumps yourself with a cotton swab or various other tools. You also may be able to get rid of them by using a curved-tip syringe to squirt water at the bumps to make them come lose. You can find one at any pharmacy.

Tonsil stones and tonsillitis can both be treated with undergoing surgery. Having your tonsils removed will cease all recurrence of any of these symptoms. Seeing an ENT doctor may be your best bet in finding out exactly what you need.
