Rather than continuing to rely on, and spend all your money on those nasty, chalky antacids, consider giving these heartburn home remedies a try; they have helped many people before you, so there's a good chance they will help you, too. Plus, what do you have to lose in trying? Well, you could lose your heartburn! As strange as this list may look, it is time tested. Give them a chance before passing judgment: • Body Position - Get Comfortable • Yellow mustard - just a teaspoon full helps the heartburn go away • Baking Soda - pretty much a slam dunk (but you might want to reconsider it if you have high blood pressure or otherwise are on a low-sodium diet) Body Position - you feel that burning sensation in your chest known as heartburn when acid from your stomach squeezes UP, into your esophagus (i.e. it's going the wrong way), where it's not supposed to be. The last thing you want to do is make it easy for this acid to go UP. So...
- If you're sitting all hunched forward (especially while you eat), SIT UP STRAIGHT! (like your mom always told you).
- If you're pants/belt are extra tight, they're squeezing your stomach contents UP. Get into more comfortable clothes, or at least loosen your belt.
- If you're feeling your symptoms at night, prop your upper body up on some pillows (or place some blocks or heavy books under the head of your mattress), so that gravity works in your favor, keeping that acid down in your stomach. Make sure NOT to just prop your head up with a pillow, as that will put unnecessary stress on your neck.
Yellow Mustard - This may seem odd, as some people think that mustard contributes to their heartburn (though it may actually be the double chili-cheese dog with onions, peppers AND mustard that leads to heartburn). In any case, a teaspoon of yellow mustard has helped many a heartburn sufferer. Baking Soda - Mixed with a little water and lemon juice, baking soda can quickly counteract the extra acid in your stomach, bringing you quick relief. The thing to be aware of though is that it contains a lot of sodium. If you have high blood pressure or are otherwise on a low sodium diet, you might want to try other alternatives until you have a chance to discuss this one with your doctor.
